Donating My Talent for a Worthy Cause

Ferret FunniesI recently lent my talent to the creation of a web site called Hide-E-Hole Ferret Rescue. This no-kill ferret shelter is run by Barbara Carlson who has been personally doing rescue work with ferrets for at least 5 or 6 years. Barb had been asking for donations on her old site to help support the shelter. Since I didn’t have any extra funds I decided to donate my talent instead.

After emailing Barb about this she was thrilled. We sent emails back and forth discussing what she would like to have and she mentioned a ferret comic. I have had experience doing comics so I drew up my first one-panel idea, which Barb loved. This eventually turned into a weekly strip, which I call Dusty’s World. This comic was inspired by my niece’s ferret, Dusty, who passed away on February 9, 2010. You can read a tribute to the real Dusty on my Mom’s blog here.

Next I thought to give Barb a new logo, which she could put on coffee cups and t-shirts as well. After doing this Barb wrote me and said her webmaster was quitting and asked if I’d like to take the reigns. I said yes and suggested she start her site from scratch on WordPress. Barb was hesitant at first, but after I told her of the advantages of having her site on WP and that I would help her get the site running she conceded.

I will be doing more work for Barb to help out her and the ferrets, because I believe it’s a very worthy cause. My niece Sarah has owned ferrets for quite some time and I have witnessed first hand the lovable and comical enjoyment these little critters can bring.

If you own ferrets yourself and want to help out then please consider making a donation. Barb and the ferrets will thank you.

    Hi Doug!

This is really great, good for you. I love those pesky critters. I don’t own myself, but I think they’re fun. Hats off to for donating your skills to a worthy cause. I think that’s wonderful.
