Unpacking Your Life

Unpacking Your Life

The Client: Brian Oakes

The Brief: Header, character, and illustration design.

Client Testimonial: “Once again Doug has done an excellent job. He was able to take a simple idea and turn it into something spectacular. Not only was he able to help me articulate the initial vision, he was able to deliver on everything that we agreed to in a quick and professional matter. I love the style of all of Doug’s drawings and am already getting ready for the next project! Thanks Doug, excellent as usual!”

Project Description:
Having worked with Brian previously designing Big Ollie’s and Christian House it was a pleasure to be working with him again on a new project. This time Brian wanted a specific header design for his personal site – the top of the world with three iconic locations done in cartoonish fashion. Just up my alley.

I started by drawing out the locations Brian specified (the ruins in Athens, the Great Pyramids in Cairo, and the Coliseum in Rome). It took me and Brian a while to figure out how to place these three locations on the globe, but after some pushing and shoving I managed to get them arranged.

Ruins in Athens

To personalize the header design I added some cartoon clouds and a small sailboat with a directional compass just below it in the water. I also drew in three little “figures” at each location (to represent Brian as he globe trots about) and the same happy sun that I used in his Christian House header.

Brian was very pleased with the final design and especially the fact that I’d been able to convey the exact idea he wanted.
