The Client: S. E. O. Webcopy Jockey

The Brief: Character, header, and avatar design for S. E. O. Webcopy Jockey.

Client Testimonial: “The character Doug pioneered for us – our ‘Webcopy Jockey’ – is exceptional. These days, for a businesses to stand out from the masses online, without being just plain weird or gimmicky, while staying true to what the core business is about, is definitely an art – thanks Doug!”

Project Description:
I was contacted by Rick Hubbell to design a header, character, and avatar for his web presence at S. E. O. Webcopy Jockey. Rick described his ideas to me about the character and header layout. He had a good idea of colors and font type. From his initial descriptions I focused on creating the Webjockey character, which I originally had riding a horse (my idea being this conveyed speed). Rick found this was too confusing to his visitors as to the initial meaning of what his site was about so we scrapped the horse and he suggested I have him riding a large fountain pen instead (the emphasis on ‘business’ instead of horse races).

Once the pen idea began to take shape Rick also suggested that the Jockey be sitting on an office chair and typing on a laptop. I created two versions of the Jockey character for Rick—one with the laptop and another with papers flying out behind him. Rick loved both of them, but he decided on using the laptop version for the header. Rick felt this version put more emphasis on the business aspects of what he does as an Internet SEO Marketer.

Next I created for Rick a personal avatar for use on the various social media sites he frequents. An overall brand strategy these days should include elements such as an avatar design. This creates a personal online identity that associates the person with their business.
